Joining The Movement: Considering Calling

The words of John chapter 6

Jesus replied, “Truly, truly, I tell you, it is not because you saw these signs that you are looking for Me, but because you ate the loaves and had your fill. Do not work for food that perishes, but for food that endures to eternal life, which the Son of Man will give you. For on Him God the Father has placed His seal of approval.”

Then they inquired, “What must we do to perform the works of God?” Jesus replied, “The work of God is this: to believe in the One He has sent.”

I don’t know about you but I like to think I could live a life that might please God. Doing the ‘right thing’, even the term ‘finding your calling’...those things sound great! I don’t believe there is anything wrong with ‘obedience’ and’ stepping out into God’s will’, however, I do think there is something better!!

Paul writes in Philippians 3

Indeed, I count everything as loss because of the surpassing worth of knowing Christ Jesus my Lord. For his sake I have suffered the loss of all things and count them as rubbish, in order that I may gain Christ.

Since working for Fusion, a question that has sat within me is ‘Am I finding God’s joy over me and my work?’. Paul’s statement above is remarkable, with all the great things he did, he settled at this one thing, to simply recognise the indescribable privilege of knowing God. If you don’t know God’s joy over your life as you consider your calling, I encourage you to seek that first!

Discomfort becomes comfort when we know Christ. It might sound impossible, even offensive, but there really is freedom available from finding things hard!! When we are in love, we find rest, true rest, one that the world doesn’t give but one our saviour gives to fuel the work he’s given us.

‘Am I finding God’s joy over me and my work?’

Heidi Baker once said: ‘Lovers make the best workers’. When you are in love, you’ll do anything for that person and it comes with ease. I don’t disregard challenges, suffering and the like but I do recognise our deep need to discover God’s unconditional shout of approval over our life, especially as we consider calling. Responding to a call as we live in His joy sets the tone for how we navigate our call.

Raising your salary, giving up a normal and stable career, regularly travelling, often pioneering... These are some of the very real discomforts and challenges to conquer working for Fusion. However, in the light of knowing the eternal Christ, they are gladly accepted and embraced as part of the adventure!

So what next? If you are experiencing worry, doubt or uncertainty about your next steps, perhaps it’s time to remember the words of Christ in John 14:27

Peace I leave with you; my peace I give to you. Not as the world gives do I give to you. Let not your hearts be troubled, neither let them be afraid.

If God puts it in your heart to travel the world preaching the gospel or work in finance or even work for Fusion.. Then do it! And do it whilst remembering the one thing that truly matters,  knowing Christ, this will fuel your calling in the long run, the greatest adventure known to man!
