Taking small groups online: Holly's story

“It doesn’t matter where you are in the country anymore. My friend could be in my small group for 12 weeks, and those 12 weeks could change her life. I really think that God’s bringing revival through small groups.”

Community and quarantine are two words that are unlikely to go together, however, Holly, a student from York, would disagree. After attending the newly launched Online Small Groups Training, Holly was convinced that small groups are a catalyst for revival, even on lockdown.

Holly first began her search for a local church in her second year of university and says that the student small group she’s a part of leaves her feeling encouraged, challenged and accepted week after week. But when COVID-19 hit the UK, thousands of students like Holly were banned from meeting in their small groups, leaving many asking the question, “where do I find my community?”.

“Now, more than ever people are on their phones - this is a time of connection. This is so new, this is so exciting. Online Small Groups Training left me feeling so equipped to do something about that.”

With students’ timelines and newsfeeds filled with bad news, Holly recognises the desire that her friends, Christian or not, have for good news. Holly describes online small groups as a “novelty”, as well as a safe space for friends to explore faith.

“Right now, everyone is craving belonging and community. For me, that’s fulfilled in small group. This is uncharted territory for all of us, but regular contact with my friends and student worker brings me peace and so much fun!”

Holly admitted that going into Online Small Groups Training, she felt out of her depth believing she’d be the only student in the sessions. She was pleasantly surprised to see that not only was she not the only student, but that she could learn from other people in the ‘room’ and contribute wise insight herself.

“I found it helpful to have a space to ask my questions, and I felt listened to and heard. Not at all inferior.”
