What does God say about your A Level results?

It isn’t a feeling you really forget, is it? Walking into school in August (that should be a crime in itself) with your stomach through the floor, dreading what lies in wait inside that envelope.

We can attach all worldly importance to the marks of ink that will adorn the critical piece of A4. And not without reason - in the short-term, these results will determine what university we get into. That, in turn, might have a bearing on the kind of job you’ll end up doing.

Whatever you’ve opened today, you haven’t changed in the eyes of God.

He loved you just as much yesterday as he does today.

He has the same idea for who He wants you to be, no matter the combination of letters you have been staring at.

I love that this is true. I love that I can write this to you today, not as something which I think is just a good idea to try and pick you up from a low, but purely because this is God’s infinitely magnificent truth that He is speaking over your life.

Proverbs 4:23 (NLT)

“Guard your heart above all else, for it determines the course of your life.”

Solomon is writing to young people here in this Proverb, and he’s encouraging you to not let anything distract you from becoming more like the person God wants you to be.

And maybe for you, today, that’s disappointment.

I know that it will hurt to have not got the results you wanted to get, especially given the feeling of tremendous injustice that you never got to sit the exams yourselves.

But guard your heart from a feeling of devastation those grades might have given you, and remember that God is going to use whatever they were to make you a Kingdom builder wherever you go.

We can sometimes allow our grades to tell us things about ourselves - good and bad.

Take time to sit down and think about who God says you are. There’s too much gold to mention here, but if you’re looking for a place to start, let me recommend Ephesians 1:4 and 1 John 3:1.

Go and celebrate - not because of the results you got (or didn’t get), but because you are loved perfectly by a God who is going to lead you on the adventure of a lifetime.
