Talk With Me - Mission Ideas & Top Tips

We all learn in different ways, and this means we all learn about faith differently too. This ultimately shapes how we share Jesus with others. Mission Styles is a tool designed to help you recognise how you are naturally wired to share Jesus, but it also equips you to share your faith with your friends. It allows you to speak their “language” by deepening your understanding of how they respond to the Gospel.

Mission Ideas

  • Invite your friend for a one-on-one conversation and see if you can make it a regular thing. Whether it’s on a walk or at a coffee shop, make sure you can both freely share and listen.
  • Ask them if there is anything they would like prayer for and if you can pray for them. Could you send your friend a voice-note praying or sharing a prophetic word for them?
  • Invite them along to a Baptism service or a Story-sharing evening.
  • Ask if you can share your personal testimony whilst also asking them of what their experience of God and Church is like (their answer may surprise you!)
  • Recommend a book or podcast that details someone’s personal story of finding faith.
  • Create an opportunity to use the Discipleship or DMC Deck so you can prompt a thought-provoking conversation. I.e. if going on a night out and your friends are doing pre-drinks, can you use the DMC Deck as the cards instead? Can you cook a meal for them and use the cards as place mats on the table?
  • Find ways of integrating them into your church community so they can meet other people. Can you invite them to Small Group, a social or a church meal?
  • Ask if they would like to read one of the Gospels with you, so they can discover more about Jesus’ character and how he relates to people.
  • In a Small Group, Talk With Me people need to be in an environment where they can form deep relationships with people. Does everyone have space to hear and be heard?

Top Tips

  • Be prepared to share your story; can you articulate why you believe what you believe?
  • Introduce your Talk With Me friend to another Christian so they have another follower of Jesus they can connect with.
  • Practise asking good, processing questions so that you can relate to, learn from, and challenge people better.
  • Pray over the conversations you have with people before, during and after them.
  • Be intentional in forming conversation with people; can you notice who around you on campus needs a friend right now even if you don’t know them that well? How can you be attentive to them and affirm the God story in their life.
  • Try not to rush a Talk With Me or be too harsh with deadlines - they need time to observe and process.
  • Don’t randomly put a Talk With Me on the spot.
  • Affirm them when they share with you – they want to know their experience and opinion is valued.
