If you could write a letter to yourself as you started uni, what would you say?
Dear Pre-University Caleb,
You are about to start one of the most significant periods of your life. I write this letter to you now so that you don't waste a moment. I write this to you now so that you make good decisions and avoid making big mistakes. I write this to you now so that you can grow more than you've ever done before and really make this University period count.
I'll start with the ‘why’ you are going to University – it’s to get a degree. Now you may not be that excited about this degree but there is so much to learn, both in and outside of lectures. Soak things up like a sponge and learn to learn. Spend time learning about where you could have the most impact on this earth, with the skills you have and the degree you are about to acquire. Dream big about the future and don’t wait until you finish to start on it.
Now, although I didn't start with this, this is probably the most important thing you can do: FIND YOURSELF A CHURCH! Don't be lazy with this one. Don't flutter around seeing which one best suits you, visit 2 or 3 and then just commit. There's going to be so much going on in the first few weeks so this is going to be hard but please, prioritise it, you won't regret it. You will regret not doing it. I learnt this the hard way.
Not drinking in your first year was one of the best decisions you could have made. Do it again, but this time commit 5 years to this. Trust me on this one. Alcohol will be at the heart of all your biggest regrets. Be sober minded and use it as a launching pad for sharing your faith. Don't worry, God will step in and give you all the confidence you need.
Sports at University is a great investment, so are extra-curricular activities. Utilise the time and opportunities University offers. Set up some business ideas – fail fast, fail cheap, fail early. You have access to some of the brightest minds in the country, in your peers, and their time is free! Try things! Start a movement. This will teach you life lessons that will stay with you long after Uni.
Finally, Caleb, you will not find a time when your friends are more receptive to the gospel. Please take this opportunity to create opportunities to share your faith. Be innovative and really be there for people and care for them. Invite them into your life and give them opportunities to see God at work in you first hand.
You've got this Caleb. Stay close to God. Get some good and faithful friends around you and pray. Pray all the time, and know what ever happens, Gods love will never leave you, nor forsake you!
