Dear Alastair

IF YOU COULD WRITE A LETTER TO YOURSELF AS YOU STARTED UNI, WHAT WOULD YOU SAY?

Dear Alastair, as you prepare for university a few tips from the perspective of history!

Everyone else is also pretty nervous about being away from home and meeting lots of people. So relax, be yourself and enjoy it.

Don't judge people on first appearances, as they'll be nervous and even putting on a show. But you'll meet some great people, who'll end up as friends for life.

Remember what's really important to you. Easiest to be clear from the outset about your relationship with Jesus. You'll find others too who share your faith though some may need encouragement. And you'll be surprised how many are seeking and asking deep questions.

Be bold, be loving, be genuine and be curious.

And remember your behaviour should consistently reflect that. You'll find easier if you build some open and transparent accountable relationships with people.

And enjoy freshers and the social life - but don't let the cheap alcohol get in the way of this. Lots of others will.

Try out some new sport and adventure opportunities: you won't regret trying.

Find a good church where you can grow in knowledge but most importantly relationship: with the Lord and others. But don't get lost in the Christian sub-culture!

And be ready to grapple with the science you're studying from a biblical faith basis - and find others to help you in this.

You're starting an amazing three years full of great opportunities to learn, grow, meet people and have fun. Make the most of it! God is with you and for you. Enjoy the adventure!

Love
Alastair

P.S. and learn to love and to laugh at yourself.
