Awkward Questions

We reckon we are on the edge of something. A move of God, revival, call it what you like - we think something extraordinary is going to happen with students and the church.

We want to be as spiritually alert as possible.

For the last few years as a Fusion team, we have been urging each other to go deeper in our own personal discipleship walks. Our team leader, Rich Wilson, shared his list of questions which he and his accountability partner ask when they meet up. We all did the same as a Fusion team and we've found it to be a really sharpening experience.

THe HOly Club

This isn't a new idea. Jesus was pretty much into question asking! In fact he asked 307 questions that are recorded in the Bible. John Wesley had his own list of questions that he and his Holy Club used to ask from the early days of methodism and into the Wesleyan revival.

We got Wesley's questions, our questions and questions from student workers from around the UK and whittled them down until we got the best 52. Then we put them onto playing cards and made them available to everyone! These are questions that provoke honesty and integrity. They bring purpose to accountability. They stop mentoring or discipleship from simply circling round the same few topics. Throughout the church, people are meeting up for coffees and trying to encourage one another in their walk with Jesus. This pack of cards simply helps those chats to get real quickly.

Each suit is a different category and includes questions like:

  • “Where do you go for comfort?”
  • "Who are you praying will come to faith in Jesus?”
  • "When was the last time you fasted?”
  • "What are you thankful for at the moment?”
  • "Do you need to forgive anyone?”

Some people use these by picking 5 cards at random and challenging each other to answer honestly. Others simply spread all the questions out and pick the ones they know are going to be most helpful. However, you use it, we hope you will find Discipleship Deck helpful in keeping short accounts with God and living freely, lightly and focused lives as you follow Jesus in today's distraction-filled society.
