Over the last 18 months we have been hearing an increasing number of stories of non-christian students feeling compelled to start reading the Bible. Most of these students have made this decision by themselves, without invitation from a friend or external source. It feels like an unprecedented moment in student ministry. God is on the move.
Going into this academic year, we felt convinced there must be even more students who would want to read the Bible but aren’t as proactive in going out of their way to buy one. We wanted to get Bibles in the hands of students so that they could find hope in Jesus and get plugged into the local church.
With 1,000 Bibles to hand out, we set up a website so that students could order one for free.
With the help of local churches and student workers, almost 200 Bibles have been sent out this term alone.
Two weeks ago I was in Birmingham with some time in between meetings. As I was driving to the next coffee shop, I saw the sign to the Birmingham University car park and I thought to myself there must be a student on that campus who would want a Bible right now. So, I parked up and walked onto campus. Straight away, I saw a student standing by himself so I walked up to him and asked if he’d like to do the Fusion Worldview survey. He said yes. One of the questions is ‘would you be interested in reading the Bible?’. He said yes. When we finished the conversation, I asked him if he’d like to be sent a free Bible. He said yes and signed up to get a free Bible.
Not every conversation is that easy, but students are more and more open to exploring spirituality and faith. There is a hunger for the word of God. This Christmas, do you have an opportunity to give a Bible to a friend and start reading it with them? How could you and your church join in the mission to reach students next term and get the living word of God into the hands of students? If you want to know more about the Bible distribution project, feel free to reach out to us, we’d love to hear from you!
