This year, for the first time in my life, I decided to make a New Year’s Resolution.
I wanted to do something achievable, so giving up chocolate was out of the question! I wanted to do something that would help me see more of the world Jesus is hoping for. So I decided to invest in a rhythm of saying thank you for something every day and tweeting about it.
Sounds easy, right? Wrong. The thing is, some days are just rubbish. Do you get those days, when it’s all a struggle, things don’t work out, people don’t quite say the right thing, you feel let down? My rhythm of thankfulness is difficult on those days because the world doesn’t work the way I think it should.
The truth is there’s a struggle I need to either reject or embrace. I can continue in the comfort that confines and suffocates me, or I can use intentional rhythms of living – whether thankfulness, solidarity, generosity, or simply love for my neighbour – to emerge from my cocoon and be part of a revolution.
Living this way is tough; it takes commitment. My efforts to start breaking open the cocoon won’t come naturally to start with. It will require some purposeful action.
Are there rhythms that you and your mates want to invest in? Maybe it’s a rhythm of praying for people regularly, a rhythm of shopping ethically, or a rhythm of engaging more intentionally in your community. We create the rhythms that change the world.
And change us.
Over to you. #thankyou for a video that stretched my thinking today.
