Adventures

I love to watch programmes about people doing extraordinary, often wacky and mostly crazy activities.

Last week I wanted a programme about three British guys who raced professional long-distance skiers to the south pole. 30 days of cold and skiing, dragging their kit behind them – bonkers!

I listened to an incredible lecture from a guy who walked the length of the Amazon. It took an entire year but he was so passionate about completing it, that there was no stopping him! I also loved the show where Bear Grylls took Miranda Hart on an expedition. Hilarious and heart-warming.

The difficult thing about these programmes is that they are not normal people; they are celebrities or extreme risk takers. Yesterday I was super-inspired by a friend’s adventure because instead of listening to, or watching an adventure that I will never be able to participate in, hers was real, extraordinary and do-able!

Joanna is an adventurer who travelled to a Kolkata, India and spent 4 weeks teaching lessons in local schools and working with children in the red light district slum area.

Joanna describes getting off the plane and being taken aback immediately by the rubble and rubbish lining the streets, intense heat, mosquitoes and the painfully obvious gap between the rich and those living in poverty.

I am inspired by her adventure because she wanted to do something that would broaden her world-view, help her understand the gospel better and teach her more about what it is to be a neighbour. The distinctive thing about Joanna, is that she went and actually did something! She went on one of Tearfund’s Transform trips and her life was changed as she has started a journey that will continue throughout her whole life.
