Pancake day! A big decision for today is: which fillings to buy? Do you prefer sweet or savoury pancakes? We could go for the classic lemon and sugar, or have a full blown three course meal all wrapped in pancakes! Another decision today is which pancake party to attend. This probably isn’t such a major decision as it’s very likely that you can probably make it to 2 or 3 and do a pancake crawl of your campus before becoming overwhelmed by the amount of flour, egg and milk you’ve consumed.
Perhaps the biggest decision today is what to do with the next 40 days. Lent is a great opportunity to spend a few weeks doing life differently and developing new habits. So here’s an offer… why not join in the consumer detox?
Consumerism is everywhere. It shapes the way we eat, shop, rest, think, love, and believe. I am a consumer and you are a consumer. For lent this year we are going to engage in a variety of actions to help us think and experience consumerism with a different attitude.
So here’s what’s you can do to get involved with Consumer Detox this Lent. Just choose one or more of these activities:
3. Dig deep into the destructive story behind many of our consumables and take action to help Tearfund Unearth the Truth on corruption.
4. Get some perspective on the world and pray for people living in poverty with our One Voice week of prayer, from 26 Feb – 4 Mar.
5. Get yourself a copy of the book written by Mary Powley, or grab the free series created by the Breathe Network. Shane Claiborne says ‘This book is not about guilt. It’s about life.’
Are you ready for life? Will you join the Consumer Detox? This is a commitment to sharing together in a new way of consuming that will create space for great conversations with housemates as you eat a third dinner of rice and beans, and will also create space to act on behalf of people who are at the other end of our consumerism. Become part of a crowd of people doing lent differently and having fun in the process!
