God Of The Goldfish Bowl

Over his goldfish bowl of a wineglass and down his nose he proclaimed, “This earth has been spinning merrily on it’s axis for billions of years so I see no reason why it should suddenly stop!”

I have reflected on the gentleman’s comment. It is a fascinating insight into a paradox that challenges all of us. Our default is often to assume that things won’t change and will continue as they are. Whether it be our employment, relationship status or accommodation, we often suppose that nothing will change - until it does. The flip side of this is that the world we live in and our circumstances are always open to change. From the climate to the economy, from society to our personal health - things can be very different from one day to the next.

Those who are starting university at the moment are living a world of change. Everything is new, for better or worse. And I reckon it is very releasing indeed to be able to live in that zone whilst holding onto the promise from God who says, “I the LORD do not change.” Malachi 3:6-7. This allows us to take risks for God without needing to maintain the status quo, which we will inevitably fail to do anyway.

So let’s embrace that paradox with both hands. Let’s accept that things which are out of our control do change all the time, whilst recognising that we serve a God who is totally in control and doesn’t change...ever.

In fact, whatever turmoil you may experience, whether it be personal or astrophysical, may you be able to know the peace of God which passes all understanding, because he is reliable and good. He is the same yesterday, today and forever. Hebrews 13:8
