The Clapham Sect

The Clapham Sect were individuals from the early 1800’s who came together as a group of people who passionately believed in a big gospel; a restorative gospel.

They were people with a holy dissatisfaction at churches that were becoming stagnant, and a world that had a huge blind spot to needs and brokenness.

This group of men and women was made up of politicians, scholars, administrators, church leaders, economists and more. United by their desire to see change, to see the kingdom of God on Earth as in heaven, they met together regularly, bringing their ordinary lives and presenting them as an offering before the Lord.

Historian Stephen Tomkins described the group as "a network of friends who were powerfully bound together by their shared moral and spiritual values, by their religious mission and social activism, and by their love for each other…” It is from this group that William Wilberforce (and others in the group) set up the anti-slavery society and abolitionist movement.

Imagine what our universities would be like if our small groups and churches were like the Clapham Sect. If we’re honest, we’re not that different.

Your small group is made up of future politicians, teachers, church leaders and administrators. Your small group has the potential to bring the status quo to its knees, just as Wilberforce did.

How did they do it? They took seriously the verse in Romans 12; “So here’s what I want you to do, God helping you: Take your everyday, ordinary life—your sleeping, eating, going-to-work, and walking-around life—and place it before God as an offering.” (MSG)

How could you and your group of mates present your ordinary life, live it in an extraordinary way and bring meaningful change? Rhythms is a community exploring these very thoughts, giving ideas for small regular actions your group could do together in order to become world changers. This doesn't happen by accident, but wholeheartedly and purposefully. It is a commitment to the God we love, to His big picture, to one another and the world we serve.

It starts with you. It starts with your group and your next step. What will it be? Rhythms.org
