Setting faith goals not safe goals

My friends and I have decided not to let 2014 happen to us. Rather than living in reaction to the ups and downs life throws at us, we are heading into the new year on the front foot. We are putting stakes in the ground now, for what we want to see happen in 2014, regardless of what might be deemed ‘possible’. We’re setting faith goals and I challenge you to join us.

Last year we prayed that the dream of road tripping round the UK in a VW camper van for student mission would be possible, despite us having no idea how to make it happen. The #fusionroadtrip is now my day job.

Last year a bunch of us set reminders on our phones to pray every Thursday night at 7pm for the Smith family. The father/husband Luke had been diagnosed with bowel cancer and so had to undergo several bouts of major surgery and chemotherapy, whilst his wife Hannah had to walk out the journey with a baby and a toddler to look after. A calendar year on and hundreds of phone notifications later, Luke is fit and healthy and back at work full time.

Did anything happen for you in 2013 that actually has the signature of God all over the result?

In 2014, what do you want to see happen in your university, with your housemates, on your course, that can only be possible with God? The point of a faith goal is that it’s going to take God’s power and God’s power only, to make the bridge between our reality and our prayer. You can’t work harder, do more, and see the prayer answered that way. It’s got to be a God thing.

My friends and I have typed out our faith goals and sent them to each other so we’re walking into 2014 united on this stuff. In some cases we actually brought each other little items to keep on our desks at work that represent our goals to help us remember to pray. I’ve got a creme egg, a balloon, a medical antiseptic wipe and a printed logo cluttering up my space now!

Students of the UK, if we keep playing it safe and praying it safe we’ll keep getting the same deal and living the same reality we are in now. Are we ok with that?

If you are not settling for the status quo and not prepared to let 2014 just happen to you, then I encourage you to set yourself some specific faith goals right now for the year ahead. If it helps you, write them in the comment box below, put your stake in the ground, and let us all join in praying for our impossible-with-out-God goals together.

‘Truly I tell you, if you have faith as small as a mustard seed, you can say to this mountain, “Move from here to there,” and it will move. Nothing will be impossible for you. Quote Jesus, Matthew 17: 20.
