Reading the Bible will kill you. The central character says you need to lose your life to gain it. He and many major people in the book are killed, die in prison or surrender their old life. Thousands of people have been killed as a result of living what the book teaches. 

If you want comfort, read self-help books instead. 

The bible is a sharp sword and it kills. It might be dying in this life, dying to self or dying to be reborn. But dying in this way is the way to truly live.
