I don’t know what comes to mind for you as Valentine’s Day approaches.
Will you avoid it, shunning what is surely a consumerist venture, or will you woo that special someone and show them how much you care?
Whatever your plans, we’re taking this opportunity to #ShowTheLove – to shout out to the world leaders who will have a chance to make key decisions on climate change later this year, to say that we love our planet and everyone who lives on it.
The scandalous truths of the gospels show us that despite our broken world, we have hope! The hope we have in Jesus isn’t something that’s on the back burner, quietly bubbling away – it’s a hope that bursts out. It’s a hope that shapes the way we live, that works its way into our conversations with friends and that overflows into the communities we find ourselves in. Even in the face of global issues like climate change, this same hope is calling out to us, urging us to act against the injustice of damaging our precious world.
Because of climate change, we’re seeing more and more extreme events – floods, droughts, the works – and our fragile planet is at risk. . More specifically the way that we live, as a global population, is putting it at risk. While it is often those who have done the least to contribute towards climate change that are already suffering the most from its effects, we can all do something about it.
‘Come, follow me’, called Jesus. ‘Love one another’, taught Jesus. Really love others. Not just those who look like you, think like you and act like you. It’s time to show the love; to care for creation, and speak out for the poor and vulnerable.
So, will you join us?
Make a green heart and wear it with pride, tune in to our (loosely) climate themed mixtape or get sharing your very own #ValentineHijack chat up lines!
It’s a day for love, let’s show it.
