The Child Behind The Eyes

I am very good at judging people. I am an expert. Simply by looking at someone, I can discern that they are arrogant, up themselves, fat, a no hoper, a no brainer or just a nobody. Perhaps you are good at judging in this way too.

But it is fake isn’t it? It is not real judgement. True judgement involves true sight; we only see in part and often we don’t see at all. What we fail to see so often is the child behind the eyes. We miss the fact that the President of the Student Union who just loves being controlling, was once a small child who never experienced the love of a parent. That lazy slob on your course was once a kid who never learned to hope and hold a dream. That girl that sleeps around has never been able to trust since she had hers stolen from her.

On New Year’s Eve, I became a Dad for the first time. A phenomenal experience through which God has taught me a lot about how he sees us – his kids. Everyone was once a little child, with purity in their hearts and innocence in their eyes. In Matthew 18 & 19, Jesus talks about little kids as being the owners of the Kingdom of Heaven and encouraged people to be more like them.

This week I am going to look at everyone who is intimidating, annoying or boring and imagine them as a little child. I’m going to ask God what they were like when they were little and what it is about them that he loves. Why not join me? I reckon the campuses and lecture halls of our country would look pretty different in that light.

Will you ask God to show you the child behind the eyes this week?
