A Life of Holiness: You Are Holy

God says: “Be holy, because I am holy.”
But what does it mean to live a life of holiness?

What this means is that you are holy. What a great statement of identity! The meaning of holy is to be set-apart for God. In the original scripture the greek word is hagios. It means to be God’s – owned by Him. This means that holiness doesn’t come from anything you do or don’t do, as it says in scripture: “He has saved us and called us to a holy life—not because of anything we have done but because of his own purpose and grace“ (2. Tim. 1:9). You can’t step in or out of being God’s - it is a constant state of identity we find ourself in. It is who you are! Being set-apart for God does also mean that your life is not your own anymore, it is His.

What a life of holiness looks like:

Leading a life of holiness happens in the everyday. It is about the attitude we go through life with, where we are seeking to see God’s heart in the insignificant as well as in the significant. When we have to make big life-changing decisions, we seek God for answers. But what about in the small things and in  the ordinary? I am absolutely sure that God cares about the small things in our lives. He cares about how you experience Freshers’ week. He cares about you getting back to uni, starting your second or third year and getting back into your routines. He cares about you finding a good community, when you are on a placement year and have moved to a new city. What does it look like, when you let him have a saying in those things?

God says: “Be holy, as I am holy” (NIV, 1 pt. 1:16). Knowing that this is something we are, not something we do, changes the way we live our lives. Let’s live our lives as God wants us to live.
