1st December | The Greatest Friend

“The Word became flesh and made his dwelling among us. We have seen his glory, the glory of the one and only Son, who came from the Father, full of grace and truth.”

John 1:14

Have you ever had that amazing friend who goes over the top with great presents, or the one who picks you up in their car in the middle of the night to make sure you get home safe, or the one who cooks you dinner when you’re too tired, and they get dessert as well (win!). The best of all is the friend who is there for you, especially when you don’t even know you need them, but you do.

The good news is Jesus is that amazing friend for all of us. Not only is He forever present when we need Him and when we think we don’t, but He went above and beyond for us. Jesus was living the dream, reigning over the universe with His Father, all His needs fulfilled. Yet, He saw and knew how much we needed Him, how much we needed hope, love, peace and joy, so He willingly gave it all up.

The word became flesh, the heavens became a stable, the throne became a manger, what once was in Heaven, came down to Earth to be with us, to live with us, to laugh with us, to hurt with us. Whatever we do, whatever we feel, whatever we go through, we never do it alone. Jesus didn’t come for a quick visit either, He didn’t pop in like we do at nan’s to get food and pocket money, He made Earth His home. He traded a life in heaven for a life of suffering, temptation, persecution, and did so willingly. Why?

Because He loves us deeply and He wants to lavish us with good gifts from above. When we understand the sacrifice He made, we realise how much we are worth in His sight. He didn’t come to dwell among us out of duty, He chose to come to us as our friend. He chose you, He knows you and He loves you. I don’t know about you, but I think that’s one pretty incredible friend.

How can you be that friend for someone this Christmas?

Can you cook a Christmas dinner for your house?

Can you buy or make someone a gift that means the world to them?

How can you go the extra mile for somebody today?
