Week 2 - Amazed by Jesus and in need of the Church

A few Sunday’s ago I met with one of our students who had come back to uni early ahead of freshers. Some things stood out to me straight away. Firstly, he asked me for a coffee (student workers will know how significant that is given how much time we spend chasing students to meet up!). Secondly, he asked if we could read the Bible (at this stage you’re probably thinking I made this story up). He is currently in the process of exploring faith and it’s amazing watching him learn more about Jesus.

As we talked and read some passages from Matthew’s Gospel, he sat back in his chair and asked, ‘How did Jesus know? How did Jesus understand humans so well?’.

He was amazed as we talked about Jesus.

It struck me again that Jesus is amazing. There is no one like him. This freshers season I wonder what it would look like for you to have the courage and boldness to simply tell people about Jesus and see how they respond.

When our time came to an end, I asked if there was anything we could pray for. He said that, among his friendship group, he has noticed that there is so much loneliness. So many people he knows are struggling at University and in need of a real, genuine, loving community.

This is such a key time for the Church to respond to the student generation.

We know that we are seeing unprecedented levels of spiritual openness among students. We know that they want to explore faith.

We know that they are searching for something more.

Over the next few weeks, we are about to see the largest number of students start university ever. There will be tens, even hundreds in some cities, of thousands of students moving onto campus. How can your church play their part in reaching this generation?

If you’d want to chat more about how Fusion could support you more in your student ministry, feel free to reach out, it would be great to hear from you.

Every week of the academic year, we are sharing a story of student mission. If you have a story to share, let us know.
