I am on the road

Life is constantly moving forward.

Even when we think our lives are going nowhere, they are going somewhere. We might feel static or stuck, locked into a job or a location, a relationship or a bed. However, our mind and spirit isn’t still. They continue to throw out thoughts, opinions, longings, trying to make sense of the road we are on. Time passes, we can’t go back, we have to go forward.

There is a story of two men on a road suddenly joined by a third man. The two men are walking and talking but by their own admission their lives are no longer going in the direction they had hoped. They are confused by life events, wrestling with disappointments and trying to come to terms with shattered dreams. The third man listens and then begins to share his story, a story that puts their story in perspective. A story so magnificent and compelling it causes the two men’s hearts to burn within in them.

The two men are disciples, the third man is Jesus, the road goes to Emmaus, the story can be found in Luke 24. It is a story we can identify with and be encouraged by. It starts with bitter disappointment and ends with the disciples energised and commissioned afresh.

As you stretch out your legs into 2012:

  • What is the road you are on?
  • Who are you walking and talking with?
  • How are you inviting Jesus to journey with you?
