Gestalt psychology engaged with the phenomenon of the whole as a single entity, made up of constituent parts. A particular phrase often misquoted suggests the whole is greater than the sum of its parts, it was in fact considered different from the sum of its parts.
Our worldly inheritance is a formative constituent of who we are, but it does not rend us completely. “What one generation tolerates, the next generation will embrace”, contemplate the words of John Wesley and think on those things that were once tolerated, but that you now embrace. The generation I walk with is marked by humility and it is this central characteristic of Christ that must now rise to the fore. For those of us uneasy with the self-acclamation of celebrity, it is no longer enough to just be ‘better’ than those gone before.
I pray that the eyes of your heart may be enlightened, so that you will know what is the hope of His calling, what are the riches of the glory of His inheritance in the saints. Ephesians 1:18 NASB
In the light of unprecedented political freedom, healthcare and provision, I compel you to stop and acknowledge the cost of history lived on your behalf. Isaac Newton recognised a debt to his forerunners, “If I have seen any further it is because I was standing on the shoulders of giants”. Can we accept the responsibility of standing for the truth of the gospel? We must recognise the shoulders on which we stand were a catalyst for revival across this nation, our heritage sparked global mission that touched the nations of the world.
From everyone who has been given much, much will be required; and to whom they entrusted much, of him they will ask all the more. Luke 12:48
Let there be no mistake. The choices you make now will influence the timing and sustainability of revival in this nation. Engage with your inheritance, both personally and collectively, recognise it's impact spiritually, emotionally and physically and incite hope for a newer world. May we be people who resolve to abide in the inheritance of Christ’s sacrificial love, living out radically simple expressions of life truly alive.
‘Missing’ isn’t the way I would have described my generation this New Years’ Eve just gone, I saw hundreds of the ‘Y’ generation fully present. I heard echo’s of singing in the stillness and felt the flicker of an ancient flame, which by the grace of God has never been extinguished. A generation communed in the physical and spiritual heritage of the countless gone before and resolved to stand, whatever the cost.
