Drinking games at uni is a reality. You will encounter it.
The question is, how do we engage? It’s helpful to think about how much and what you will drink when at pre-drinks, nights out and drinking games before you are thrust into the middle of it.
The bible teaches, ‘Don't copy the behaviour and customs of this world, but let God transform you into a new person by changing the way you think. Then you will learn to know God's will for you, which is good and pleasing and perfect.’ Romans 12:2
So how about using a drinking game as a tool to draw closer to God and draw others to God? Check out how I have used the rules for the drinking game ‘The Ring of Fire’ to do this;
Ace- Waterfall- How are your actions affecting and influencing your uni mates around you?
2- Choose- Choose someone who doesn’t know Jesus to pray for this summer.
3- Me- Ask yourself, ‘How am I doing on my walk with Jesus?’ What could you do this summer to draw closer to God?
4- Floor- How are you doing on nights out? We can hit the dance floor hard and party but let’s remember to stay wise with our drinking and keep accountable.
5- Thumb Master- What do we want to be ‘under the thumb’ over? Our passion for Jesus? Our hate of injustice?
6- Chicks- Guys and girls, how are we treating each other? Let’s remember to honour and respect our brothers and sisters.
7- Heaven- ‘Your kingdom come, on earth as it is in Heaven’ (Matt 6:10). One way we can have heaven on earth is through healings! Step out and ask to pray for someone!
8- Mate- Who are you telling about Jesus?
9- Rhyme- Dime and Time
Dime- Whilst being a skint student, let’s be generous with the cash you do have and bless those around us.
Time- Are you prioritising your time to make lectures, get your essays in on time, make church and small group?
10- Categories- We can often put our lives in categories ‘church friends’, ‘course mates’, ‘housemates’. Try bringing them all together for a combined gathering.
Jack- Make a rule- challenge yourself and make a rule for the next year of uni. E.g. I will attend every lecture.
Queen- Questions- Why don’t you get drunk? Why do you go to church? Why is there suffering? Prepare your answers! You will get asked these questions!
King- Drinking the Kings cup- ‘If anyone is thirsty, let him come to me and drink’ (John 7:37) God our king and father in heaven has so much for us. He wants to satisfy us, know us and have relationship with us. Are you thirsty for him?
If these questions have made you think, check out the studentlinkup box which is ideal for preparing yourself for uni life. A must for all freshers but also very worth it for you second, third and fourth years! Let’s not hold back from thinking about who we want to be at uni.
