James Challenges Me

I was travelling home on the train the other day and decided to read the book of James.

It’s a short book. Only 5 chapters long. But wow is it challenging. Nearly every verse challenged or encouraged me greatly. Often I write down verses that stand out, I started doing this but realised I would be writing out most of the book!

Put some time aside this week to read James…It’s great!

James 1:12 was a verse that really stood out.

‘God blesses those who patiently endure testing and temptation’

Get this… when we avoid temptation it’s good for us. It helps us live pure lives. It helps us look more like Jesus. It protects our reputation and allows us to have a witness to those around us.

AND… God blesses us!!

This means, that every single day in uni we will get blessed.
That’s because in uni we’re surrounded by temptations every moment of every day. The classic uni culture may tempt us. People's life style choices may look appealing. Old thoughts or habits may tempt us.
We all know what tempts us. But when we endure this time, and stand by Jesus and the goodness that he has for us, we’re blessed.

James 4:17 ‘Remember it is a sin to know what you ought to do and then not do it’
Wow. That’s convicting.

This means that every single day we have to choose to not gossip about our housemate,
not to lead people on, not drink too much, not be lazy.
We choose to live purely, have self control, tell our friends about Jesus, work hard, be generous.

For some, this can seem daunting or impossible. For others, it’s an exciting challenge and an earnest desire.

James 1:2 ‘When troubles come your way, consider it an opportunity for great joy’

What an incredible God we serve. One who knows us so well that he will give us strength to overcome temptation, bless us when we do and leads us into a place of great joy.

Don’t be daunted by the temptation or testing that surrounds you. Face it head on with Jesus and choose to be different. Let's live well at uni!
