2 weeks ago I experienced my first ever live Football game. I watched Wales v Cyprus. I’m not much of a football fan so I was extremely surprised at the emotions I felt throughout the game.
The excitement when Wales scored their first goal, the disappointment when Cyprus then scored, the joy at Wales’ second goal and the frustration at some of the ref’s decisions!!
The emotion I felt during the last 10 minutes of the game reminded me of a feeling I would often get in uni. I call it the ‘Here we go…’ feeling.
It’s the combination of excitement and nerves. It’s the unknown of where this moment will take you next. At the football, it was the excitement of hoping Wales were going to win whilst nervously hoping Cyprus wouldn’t score again.
I always get the ‘here we go’ feeling when I tell someone about Jesus for the first time. The excitement of knowing I’m sharing the most important thing in life to someone, combined with the nerves of not knowing how they will take it or where their questions will lead.
I experienced the ‘here we go’ feeling many times at uni. One that stands out was a conversation I had on a night out during freshers.
Third year student: What are you doing tomorrow?
Fresher Chloe: *here we go…* I’m going to church
Third Year student: You go to church?
Fresher Chloe: Yeah I’m a Christian
Third Year student: Is that why you’re not smashed?
Fresher Chloe: Yeah!
Third Year student: Oh. That’s cool. What do you do?...Why do you go?... So what do you actually believe?... What about creation?...What about sex outside marriage?...
*Brings over the rest of the rugby team to let them hear me repeat those answers, whilst they laugh together and joke if they should come to church*
At the point I felt the ‘here we go’ feeling, I could have either backed away and just said ‘meeting up with some friends you?’ or go for it and see where the conversation would take me.
I’m so glad I went for it. A year later I was able to pray for healing for that guy and share how much Jesus loved him and has a plan for his life.
Next time you’re sat in your kitchen and someone brings up church, evolution, purpose in life, I assure you at some point you will experience the ‘here we go’ feeling…Go with it!! It’s much more fun that way.
