What are your dreams for your students?
Do you want them to naturally talk about Jesus with their friends? To be released in their giftings? To grow in their ability to lead? To take risks in adventuring with Jesus?
As a new student worker, I had big dreams for my students. Like a new parent, I suddenly didn’t care about what happened to me. All I wanted was to see them released, getting opportunities and having adventures that I had never had.
And then something surprising happened. Time and time again, I found that if I wanted something for my students, I had to step into it first.
When I wanted them to get to know their flatmates, I needed to visit my students and chat with their flatmates. When I wanted them to have a good work rest rhythm, I needed to model a balanced life (always a challenge!) When I wanted them to grow as leaders, I needed to grow as a leader myself and invite them along on that journey.
I thought discipleship was, "Let's talk about how to live."
I found that it was more, "I'm going on this adventure. Come along with me!"
Paul told the Corinthians, "Imitate me, as I imitate Christ.”
How can your student discipleship look more like an invitation to imitation?
