Terror. Respond to Jesus

The tragic events in Manchester and heightened security all over the country are a media frenzy. Constant news updates make for a stimuli overload of details and analysis.

At times, I’ve found myself engrossed in news articles, videos and live updates which seem to be designed to provoke worry, escalating thinking and self-centredness.

We all know the details. However, I’m interested in what we do now. It's important to reflect and grieve, but we must also listen to the voice of God.

three things to do at this time:

1. PRAY

These events are designed to make us afraid. People don’t know if they’re safe, wondering whether they’ll be the next victims.

So, let us pray for the world around us. Let’s intercede for love, joy and peace in the Holy Spirit to permeate our communities. Let’s connect with the Father in prayer, receive his truth and love and give it away in our day to day.

This week, I flew to Manchester 2 days after the attack. When I arrived, I quickly sensed a quiet and anxious atmosphere. I recognised I could either focus on and embrace this atmosphere or look up.

A friend and I decided to walk up and down the streets of the city to proclaim life, freedom and unity. This time shifted our thinking to be aware Jesus was walking those streets with us, amongst the pain of the people. He's our ever present help in trouble.

2. WORSHIP

We know that through worship we receive God’s perspective as we align our thinking, spirits and bodies with Jesus. Jesus is still on the throne and that’s the greatest reality - far greater than any event on this earth. Jesus is our focus, we fix our eyes on him, giving him the glory he deserves.

3. GIVE

These events can create attitudes amongst individuals to protect themselves and be suspicious of others which challenges humanity's sense of oneness and togetherness.

Romans 12:1 reads: 'present your bodies as a living sacrifice, holy and acceptable to God, which is your spiritual worship.'

When attempts are made to take joy and peace away, we show others it's still there in Christ! I encourage you to give to others in any way you can to offer what God has given you.

Let your life be a gift

Whether that’s tipping more than you would normally or simply making eye contact and smiling at a stranger on campus, let your life be a gift. More than ever, love must be tangible and practical to be seen and heard. Only then, will people see the Father’s glory in the midst of their suffering.
