As thousands of students head to university campuses over the coming weeks, we hear from Sam, who is heading back to university for his 2nd year. He shares her experience of finding a church at university as well as some wisdom for Freshers of 2020.
HOW DID IT FEEL TO FIND A CHURCH AT UNI?
"It’s a great and weird experience. I tried out different churches. You're finding a whole new community and having grown up in church my whole life and I was trying to find something that matched my experience at home, but also something different for me. It was a great experience for me."
HOW DID YOU CHOOSE A CHURCH? WHAT KIND OF THINGS WERE YOU LOOKING FOR IN A CHURCH?
"I like to do things off the cuff. I wanted to visit a church and see how it felt. I did feel prepared because I’d looked at church ahead of time, but I didn’t have a list of things I wanted in a church. Instead, I wanted to find a church where I could connect with God in a way that challenged me.
I connected with student workers before going to churches which helped me to feel more comfortable. One student worker said, “we’d love for you to be a part of our church but equally we’ll support you in whichever church you choose to be a part of.” I didn’t feel any pressure, but talking to them really helped."
DO YOU HAVE ANY ADVICE FOR STUDENTS STARTING UNIVERSITY THIS YEAR?
"Try churches with other people. Finding a church by yourself can feel daunting, but asking someone else to go with you makes it easier."
Don’t know any Christians to invite to try church with you? Why not invite your new flatmates to try church with you?
