I remember being invited to a Fusion Training Day when I was in my second year of university. At first, I was confused by the invitation. “Thanks… but I’m not a student worker”, I’d say in response. The idea of being in a room surrounded by people who were paid to reach students like me felt both intimidating, and a little unnecessary. This wasn’t my role. I was still a student myself. A Training Day wasn’t for me, or so I thought.
However, this second year student was persuaded by a free road trip to a new city and booked a ticket.
It was on this Training Day in 2016 that God sparked something in me that I hadn’t recognised before. Standing in an old church in London, surrounded by new friends worshipping and praying for my generation of students, a calling to student mission was revealed and a fire within me was sparked. It would be from here that my purpose for being on campus would change from being career focused to gospel focused. This would be the starting point for boldly sharing Jesus with my friends. This would be where my biggest prayers were first prayed.
God grabbed my attention, shifted my focus and planted a dream within me to see each one of my friends encounter Him during our time at university. I cannot proclaim that every one of my friends accepted Jesus within those three years on campus, however, each friend discovered a home away from home in the form of a local church community. One friend accepted Jesus into her life and is still walking closely with Him now.
"It was on this Training Day in 2016 that God sparked something in me that I hadn’t recognised before."
I’m so thankful for the invitation to my first Fusion Training Day. As God revealed more of what He’d called me to do on my campus, I stood shoulder to shoulder with others contending for revival. It didn’t matter that I wasn’t a Student Worker, or even on a student team. It mattered that I found my place in the student mission story.
