2nd December | His Name Shall Be

For a child is born to us, a son is given to us. The government will rest on his shoulders. And he will be called: Wonderful Counselor, Mighty God, Everlasting Father, Prince of Peace.

Isaiah 9:6

I recently became an auntie for the 7th time to a beautiful baby girl called Olivia. After months of prayer, her parents decided on her name before she was born. They knew that the name that they chose to give their daughter held significance, that it would be what she was known as and called by.

When Mary was told that she was going to have a baby boy and His name shall be Emmanuel, she knew that His name would hold significance. Emmanuel, God with us, would become what He would be known as and called to do.

Isaiah 9:6 tells us that God has many names, all holding a different significance. He is both a counselor and mighty, a Father and a prince. These names hold different significance to us at different times. God is all things at all times, but maybe He knew that sometimes we would need to know Him closer in specific ways. Sometimes, we need an Everlasting Father more, and other times we need a Wonderful Counselor. Sometimes, we need a Prince of Peace, other times we need a Mighty God.

Jesus cannot be molded to who we want Him to be, but He, in His mystery can be both a Mighty God and a baby. In His grace, He gives us what He knows we need at the right time.

Advent Activation

  1. What do you need from Jesus today? Do you need the Peace of Prince? The challenge of Mighty God? The love of an Everlasting Father? Ask God what you need and receive it.
  2. As you are reminded of what you need today, how can you offer that to others? How can you bring peace to your home? How can you encourage a friend? Ask for God’s help, and then do it!
