"She decided she wanted to be all in."

It’s no coincidence that in trials, students often turn to Jesus for help. In the face of uncertainty, students want to cling to something secure, and for Laura*, a student in Oxford, this could not be more true.

Throughout Laura’s 1st year of University, she sat on the fringe of faith as she intermittently attended church, but had not accepted Jesus into her heart.

“In her first year, we’d seen her intermittently, but she was on the fringe. She wasn’t connected into a small group and we didn’t really know much of her story”, says Aidan, her Student Worker.

As graduation ceremonies were canceled, lectures moved online and Freshers Week reimagined, students have questioned if their ‘firm foundation’ really is that firm. Laura was no different.

“She wanted to be all in."

During one Student Night at church, Laura listened as she heard these words of Jesus:

“Therefore everyone who hears these words of mine and puts them into practice is like a wise man who built his house on the rock. The rain came down, the streams rose, and the winds blew and beat against that house; yet it did not fall, because it had its foundation on the rock. But everyone who hears these words of mine and does not put them into practice is like a foolish man who built his house on sand. The rain came down, the streams rose, and the winds blew and beat against that house, and it fell with a great crash.”

Matthew 7:24-27

In the sudden realisation that her foundation was unsteady, she broke down into tears. As she approached a member of the prayer team, she began to understand for the first time that Jesus could be her foundation and that in Him, she could have hope.

“She wanted to be all in. She wanted to put her full trust in Jesus, so she gave her life to Him in that service!”

Since then, she has committed to being a part of an online small group and has been regularly reading the Bible with other students in the church.
