Getting Strategic

Over the last two years 30 churches have taken part in a Learning Community process that has helped them reflect on, discuss, pray through, challenge and develop their student works. We’d love to share with you three of the exercises we've used with those churches.

This is an opportunity to gather your team, or to sit alone, and ask God what he wants to do through your student work. It’s also an opportunity to be intentional in building towards the dreams he gives you.

These three exercises will help you to:
  • Reflect on your current position: what are your strengths, your weaknesses, the opportunities and threats around you?
  • Dream big: what could happen in the coming two years of student ministry at your church?
  • Make some tangible plans for the next six months which help you take steps towards those dreams

Some people will enjoy analysing what is happening now (SWOT). Others will thrive in dreaming big for what could be (2 year goals). Still others will love the practical wranglings of working through short term practical action points (6 month action plan).

I encourage you to keep focused in each exercise, not allowing yourself to pull too much into the future of what could be whilst doing exercise one; not getting bogged down with the ‘how’ of your two year dreams in exercise two and focusing on putting down some measurables - however difficult that is - in exercise three.  Each person will have time to be in the head space they thrive in, but will also need to discipline themselves to make the most of the other stages!

Enjoy!

Having looked at these exercises, why not join other student workers from across the UK in December to build on those plans?  The next national Resonate Day is on Wednesday 3rd December and is free for those from Connection Churches, see more here

If you’d like to discuss your student work reality, vision and plans further with a Fusion team member or with other student workers, why not come along to a Student Work Local or get in touch with Pippa.
