Who can you encourage today?

The room was filled with smiling faces and open conversation. A sense of family reigned over any differences, and one theme prevailed: unity.

A couple of weeks ago, 60 students and young adults from different churches around Sheffield, gathered together in unity to worship over the city.

Led by a worship collective called ‘Far & Wide’, 8 churches were represented over the course of the night. Far & Wide began 2 years ago, with a vision for church unity, 4 worship leaders and a student living room. For 2 years, the group prophesied, prayed and wrote worship songs aimed to bring churches together. Creatives from all over the city caught onto this student led movement, and earlier this month, hosted a worship evening where we stood as one church.

Fiercely Loved. Purposely Called

As we praised and worshipped, we were all reminded that despite any differences in the way our worship teams were set up, the way we did communion or what time we met on a Sunday, we are fiercely loved and purposely called by the same God. Through this knowledge, we can celebrate each other, encourage each other and humbly learn from each other.

With this said, how do we model unity, whilst operating in an imperfect world with imperfect people? How do we give grace and mercy when required? How do we cheer our brothers and sisters on when we don't agree with their strategy?

But in order to create unity, we must lay pride aside, choosing humility. I believe, the best antidote to pride is encouragement. When we genuinely encourage the people we serve alongside, we are choosing patience, choosing gentleness and choosing love. We throw pride aside for the sake advancing the Kingdom and stand in celebration with our brothers and sisters.

"Be completely humble and gentle; be patient, bearing with one another in love." (Ephesians 4:2)

One practical way of encouraging unity is by nominating a friend for a Student Mission Award. Perhaps you know somebody who has served diligently in sharing their faith? Perhaps you know someone with a fantastic idea for student mission? Perhaps you know someone who needs the encouragement?
