Work as Worship

Ever thought about it? Work…as worship?

At a first glance it seems a bit odd. But if you think a little longer, it actually makes a lot of sense.

Worship is simply our response to God. It’s far more than what we sing on a Sunday. Worship is our heart’s reaction to God and as a result is reflected in how we live our lives in relationship with Him. That’s our whole lives, every day, 24/7, which inevitably includes our time at work. Now I’m not suggesting that we start pulling a guitar out from under the desk to strike up some heartfelt praise at every opportunity. But instead consider the daily implications this has for the way we work.

John 4:23 says that “true worshipers will worship the Father in the Spirit and in truth, for they are the kind of worshipers the Father seeks.” This is a call to true and authentic worship; giving the best we’ve got for God, earnestly going for it for Him.

But do we?

It’s easy to give it your all on a Sunday when the praise is pumping and everyone else is fervently joining in. But what about on Monday? When everyone’s a bit bleary eyed, the coffee’s lukewarm and you’ve got to do those reports you’ve been putting off. If worship is a lifestyle, and we want to give God the best that He deserves, then surely this means working well too? Not for personal credit or to show others up or to further our own careers, but because we want to worship well and reflect Gods glory in our lives.

We are called to be ‘salt and light’ in the world and Matthew 5:16 says “let your light shine before others, that they may see your good deeds and glorify your Father in heaven.” So next time you’re wondering how you can authentically reflect Jesus to your colleagues, and give God some glory, maybe consider that being a good employee could be a good place to start.
