I went for a walk at the weekend in the cold countryside around where I live. As I was walking the sun was setting and the view looked stunning.
It’s one of my favourite things to do, just getting outside and crunching through the icy leaves without any distractions or agendas, just letting myself take it all in.
As I walked through one of the fields that I know so well I had one of those moments where things become a little bit clearer. Stuff comes into focus a bit more and you gain a slightly better perspective. As I stared at my infinitely complex surroundings and felt the cool air on my face I had this moment of realisation. I remember feeling very peaceful and thinking to myself “God, you are pretty big.”
Now I know what you’re thinking; steady on Tom, no need to go so deep so fast! God being big, that’s all a bit, well, obvious isn’t it?!
I must admit it’s not the most gargantuan of revelations. But that afternoon I did gain a fresh perspective, or at least a refreshed perspective, on how big God is and the reassurances that come with that.
There are lots of times in the Bible where God lets us know even though He’s infinitely massive, He’s still intimately interested in us as individuals. God says that He knows us so well that He has our names written on the palms of his hand and that He knows the number of hairs on our head!(Isaiah 49:15-16 & Luke12:7)
This is worth keeping in mind, because if you know someone well it would imply that you like spending time with them. You’re up for going deeper with them and up for continuing your relationship with them. So if God knows us really well, then it would suggest that He wants to meet with us, speak to us, go deeper with us and generally do life with us.
So don’t be surprised if God turns up in your life, if anything be expectant that He will, because He likes spending time with you.
So as the year roles on let’s be ready for experiences of a bigger nature.
